About Oklahoma City

As an Oklahoma City corps member, you have the opportunity to serve in a region with two distinct communities: the more metropolitan Oklahoma City, and Lawton, home to a large military family community and an area with a rich Native history.

Oklahoma City is unlike any other city in the world. Located in the heart of the state, Oklahoma City's charm and lively atmosphere offers everything you look for in a modern metropolitan community—an abundance of the arts, quality health care, outdoor activities and more. And it does so without high costs, energy shortages, smog or traffic congestion. It is a distinctly livable city where you can pursue your dreams and still enjoy a rich quality of life.

The Lawton community is located 90 miles southwest of Oklahoma City and is home to Fort Sill, one of the largest army bases in the U.S. This close-knit community includes a strong Teach For America alumni presence.

With a diverse population of nearly 1.5 million, the Oklahoma City and Lawton metro areas have an underserved population that includes children who face considerable challenges. Corps members, alumni, and staff working in Oklahoma City and Lawton strive to eliminate educational inequity by promoting rigor, accountability, respect and a social justice perspective. We are committed to building a lasting pipeline of leaders who have the conviction to demonstrate what is possible in historically underserved communities. We believe that, with this work, the future is promising.

Teach For America – Oklahoma City began in 2011, serving communities in central and western Oklahoma. To date, more than 120 corps members have positively impacted the lives of approximately 24,000 students. Our teachers, alumni, and staff have adopted Oklahoma's spirit of collaboration, grit and determination, and we work relentlessly to ensure the students of our region have the top opportunities they deserve.
